Asset

Asset

Any item of economic value owned by an individual or corporation, especially that which could be converted to cash.

Examples are cash, securities, accounts receivable, inventory, office equipment, a house, a car, and other property.

On a balance sheet, assets are equal to the sum of liabilities, common stock, preferred stock, and retained earnings.

A Fixed Asset is a long-term, tangible asset held for business use and not expected to be converted to cash in the current or upcoming fiscal year, such as manufacturing equipment, real estate, and furniture.

A Current Asset, on the other hand, is a balance sheet item which equals the sum of cash and cash equivalents, accounts receivable, inventory, marketable securities, prepaid expenses, and other assets that could be converted to cash in less than one year.

A company's creditors will often be interested in how much that company has in current assets, since these assets can be easily liquidated in case the company goes bankrupt.

In addition, current assets are important to most companies as a source of funds for day-to-day operations.
